Food Should Taste Good!

I have never been a big fan of plain tortilla chips. I’ll eat them with salsa when I get the obligatory basket of them at a Mexican restaurant, but I’d never buy a bag myself and I’d certainly never snack on them alone. Earlier this year, though, my husband and I discovered Food Should Taste Good tortilla chips at Whole Foods. Hello deliciousness! We bought the Multigrain variety and had it with pineapple salsa and homemade hummus (not at the same time, of course), but I found that these were tortilla chips that I actually liked eating plain too. Imagine that!

Why were they great plain? Well, it’s the whole grains, of course. They give these chips a hearty, multi-dimensional flavor that’s lacking in tortilla chips made only from corn. And, of course, your garden variety corn tortilla chip is probably overly salty, more than a tad greasy, and made with at least a few ingredients with names you cannot pronounce (and, really, probably don’t want to be ingesting either). Not to mention the fact that so much of the corn in processed foods is genetically modified. Food Should Taste Good chips are the antidote to the common tortilla chip–free of cholesterol, preservatives, trans-fat, and GMOs. They are also gluten free and lower in sodium than other varieties of chips. And (yes, there’s more!), they come in flavors that make Doritos and its ilk look positively antiquated. Cool Ranch? Pfft. I’d much rather have Sweet Potato chips. Oh yes, you read that correctly–Food Should Taste Good makes SWEET POTATO TORTILLA CHIPS! Sweeeet.

I was able to sample five varieties of Food Should Taste Good chips for this review. I chose Sweet Potato (duh, of course), Olive, Chocolate, Cheddar, and Jalapeno. It was hard work making my way through each bag of chips, but I do it for you, dear readers. I loved the Cheddar flavor chips on their own–they have a real cheddar flavor and they, thankfully, do not leave a neon orange stain on your fingertips after you touch them. The best part about them, though, was the multigrain flavor from the quinoa, flax, sunflower, and sesame seeds in each chip. Yum. So much more filling and nutritious than a plain corn chip.

One flavor that I felt would either be a big hit or a gigantic, epic, huge miss was Chocolate. Lucky for me, it end up being a hit. At first, you detect the saltiness and the corn flavor, but then you get hit with the deep flavor of cocoa and a hint of vanilla. Tastiness! The Food Should Taste Good website recommends eating these with apple butter or strawberries and balsamic vinegar–my idea was fruit nachos with a drizzle of dark chocolate.

Oh yes. So good, I may have shed a tear or two. Okay, not really. But I could have!

The Olive flavor was fantastic with hummus and the Jalapeno chips made an awesome base for nachos of the non-fruit variety. Sweet Potato did not disappoint–they really had the aroma of roasted sweet potatoes and they paired well with a cranberry salsa that we had on hand.
